The Pyrénées-Orientales has no shortage of unusual accommodation — treehouses in the Corbières, yurts at the foot of the Canigou, cave houses in the Fenouillèdes. But sleeping on a docked sailboat in a Mediterranean marina is something else entirely. An experience that no hotel or apartment can replicate.
This guide is written by Jonathan Marc, the sailboat's owner and a local resident of the PO. You'll find honest, practical information about what it's really like to spend a night on board — no filters, no marketing fluff.
The experience in practice
The sailboat is moored in the marina at Port de Leucate. It doesn't sail — this is a stationary stay, which means there's no risk of seasickness. The very slight movement from boats passing by is barely perceptible in a sheltered marina.
What strikes you first is the silence. Marinas are surprisingly quiet at night — the soft lapping of water against the hull, the gentle creak of the mooring lines, the occasional gull. Nothing like the street noise of a seaside hotel.
In the morning, it's the light through the portholes that wakes you — low, golden, Mediterranean. Coffee in the cockpit as the marina comes to life, the first kitesurfers heading out onto the lagoon: these are the kinds of mornings you remember for a long time.
💡 Dockside only: the sailboat does not sail. It's a floating accommodation, not a sailing hire. This formula is ideal for anyone who wants the on-board experience without any nautical obligation.
On board: what to expect
- 2 comfortable cabins — bedding provided, built-in storage
- A fully equipped galley kitchen — hob, fridge, crockery, cutlery
- A spacious cockpit — your terrace on the water, perfect for drinks or dinner outside
- Shore power — the boat is connected to the marina's electrical supply
- Fresh water on tap — connected to the dock's water supply
The cockpit is what surprises guests most. Larger than it looks from the outside, it comfortably seats four for dinner. In the evening, with the marina lights reflecting on the water and the tramontane having died down, it's hard to imagine a better setting.

Check availability and bookThe bathroom — let's be honest
This is the question everyone has but nobody asks directly. The WC and shower are located at the harbour master's office, just a few metres along the pontoon where the boat is moored — not in the main marina building, not 500 metres away.
These facilities are clean, maintained by Port de Leucate, and accessible at any hour. This is completely standard in marinas — the vast majority of boats this size don't have an on-board shower, and sailors simply use the marina facilities.
Bring flip-flops for the walk to the facilities. With a dressing gown and a wash bag in a tote, it's exactly like using the bathroom block at a good campsite — minus the August queues.
Port de Leucate
Port de Leucate is one of the most active marinas on the Aude coastline. Located at the northern tip of Leucate lagoon, it has around 900 berths and several watersports bases. It's also the departure point for ferry services to nearby islands in season.
Within walking distance of the pontoon you'll find:
- Several marina restaurants (fish, seafood)
- A small grocery shop and bakery
- Port-Leucate's sandy beach (5 min on foot)
- The kitesurfing and wingfoil zones on the lagoon (5-10 min by bike)
Leucate village, with its streets and market, is 12 minutes by car. Le Barcarès and its beaches are 12 minutes in the other direction.
Who is this for?
- Couples looking for a romantic, original night away — the cockpit at sunset is hard to beat
- Kitesurfers and windsurfers who want to be right next to the Leucate spot and soak up the marina atmosphere
- Sailing enthusiasts who want to experience life on board without any nautical commitment
- Families with children looking for an adventure night (2 adults + 2 children maximum)
💡 Note: this stay is less suitable for guests with limited mobility (boarding via gangway + steps down into the cabins), or those with a strong anxiety around water. If in doubt, contact Jonathan directly before booking.
Combine sailboat + apartment
Some guests choose a hybrid formula: a few nights in an apartment in Le Barcarès to enjoy the beach, pool and local activities — and one night on the sailboat in Leucate for the experience. It's a great way to see both sides of the coastal Pyrénées-Orientales.
Jonathan manages both types of accommodation and can organise the transition on request. The apartments (marina view and lakeside) are 12 minutes by car from the sailboat.
